Officially known as the Qatar Goodwood Festival, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ is a five-day meeting staged, as the name suggests, at Goodwood Racecourse in West Sussex in August. The major races run during the week are, in chronological order:
Day 1 (Tuesday) – The Qatar Goodwood Cup: The finest horse racing event in the world brings together the most talented equine athletes and renowned names in the sport. The Group 1 Qatar Goodwood Cup is the main attraction.
Day 2 (Wednesday) – The Qatar Sussex Stakes: During the race, jockeys compete for a prize fund of £1 million, with the winner receiving a share of the prize money. This day attracts a lot of spectators, including celebrities, and it’s the perfect day to enjoy some fantastic racing.
Day 3 (Thursday) – Famous for its competitive field, the Qatar Nassau Stakes is a major highlight of the festival and draws large crowds of spectators who are eager to witness the thrilling action on the track. It is also Ladies’ Day, where fashion takes centre stage, and there are prizes for the best-dressed lady.
Day 4 (Friday) – The King George Qatar Stakes is a high-stakes race, with valuable prestige on the line. Some of the most iconic sprinters in the history of horse racing – including Lochsong, Choisir, and Battaash – won this race. It’s also a great day to enjoy live music and delicious food.
Day 5 (Saturday) – Stewards’ Cup Day: The final day of the festival features the prestigious Stewards’ Cup, a six-furlong handicap race. This day is known for its lively atmosphere, with lots of entertainment both on and off the track.
